Call of Duty is a first-person shooter series published by Activision Blizzard. The series began in 2003, focusing on retelling the events of WWII, but the series has shifted over the years, featuring games set during the Cold War, the modern era, and even the far future.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was a breakthrough moment for the series, stamping the series' identity by offering up a campaign full of explosive set-pieces. It also added the inclusion of the world-famous online portion of the game, where players spawn in and fight across tight multiplayer maps.
To date, the series has sold over 400 million copies. Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Raven Software, and Sledgehammer Games have all worked on various titles in the series, which has been on an annual release schedule since 2005.
