Hasbro promises more D&D video games after Baldur’s Gate 3 success
You can expect more D&D video games in the near future, Hasbro said in its earnings call, and Baldur’s Gate 3’s massive success is why. Hasbro briefly outlined plans to continue expanding its digital gaming section during its recent earnings call – the only part of the company that made a profit in 2023 – and said its focus will continue to be on D&D while the toy section recovers (thanks, PC Gamer).
Hasbro’s overall revenue declined by 15 percent, but revenue from its digital gaming segment increased by 10 percent. While Hasbro cited Monopoly Go as one of its best-performing games, the company also said the award-winning Baldur’s Gate 3 played an important role in raising the section’s profits.
"Baldur's Gate had another healthy quarter," Gina Goetter, Hasbro’s chief financial officer, said during the call. "I think for the year in totality, Baldur's Gate was around $90 million of revenue."
Considering BG3 launched in August 2023, that’s a pretty strong performance. Goetter said they expect revenue from BG3 to decline as 2024 progresses, but Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks said they expect “a long tail” from the award-winning game for the rest of the year and beyond.
“Video games will clearly be a huge leg up on the D&D business," Cocks said. "Baldur's Gate 3 is just the first of several new video games that will be coming out over the next five to 10 years that I think will continue to power that franchise.”
Whether those have ties to Baldur’s Gate 3 and the possible sequel that Larian teased in BG3’s epilogue or other classic D&D games – Neverwinter, for example, or Planescape Torment – Cocks didn’t say.
